The journey begins in Seville in the late morning with a first look at the Andalusian capital and lunch in the city. In the afternoon you board the train, meet the crew over a welcome toast and settle into your cabin as the Al Ándalus heads for Jerez de la Frontera. A touch of flamenco usually accompanies the welcome, though it may be changed or cancelled because of scheduling. Night in Jerez.
Day 2
Jerez — Sherry, Horses & the Old Town
A full day in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry and of the Andalusian horse. Guided visits take in a historic bodega and the old centre, with free time to explore at your own pace. A highlight is the show of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, where the Andalusian horses “dance” — usually part of the programme, though it may be changed or cancelled because of scheduling or weather. Lunch and dinner are served aboard, and the train stays a second night in Jerez.
Day 3
Cádiz & Córdoba — From the Atlantic to the Caliphate
The morning belongs to Cádiz, the ancient port city on the Atlantic, with time in its historic centre beside the sea. Lunch is served aboard as the train travels inland to Córdoba; the afternoon is yours, and dinner is at a local restaurant. Night in Córdoba.
Day 4
Córdoba & Mérida — Mosque-Cathedral and Roman Spain
A guided morning at Córdoba's Mezquita-Catedral — a forest of red-and-white arches — and the old lanes around it. After lunch aboard, the train crosses into Extremadura to Mérida, founded as Emerita Augusta in 25 BC, for an afternoon among its Roman theatre, amphitheatre and bridge. Night in Mérida.
Day 5
Cáceres & Torrijos — Medieval Stone
The train reaches Cáceres around breakfast. Its walled old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of palaces, noble towers and storks' nests — is explored with a guide, with time for local produce and wandering on your own. The Al Ándalus then continues east to Torrijos, near Toledo, with dinner aboard.
Day 6
Toledo & Aranjuez — Three Cultures and Royal Gardens
From Torrijos, a day visit to Toledo, the former capital above the Tagus where Christian, Jewish and Muslim Spain met — its streets, viewpoints and monuments. After lunch the journey moves on to Aranjuez and the grounds and gardens of its Royal Palace. Dinner is served aboard as the train heads for Madrid.
Day 7
Madrid — Royal Finale
The train arrives in Madrid around breakfast time. A last round of visits in the capital leads to a farewell gala lunch, and the journey comes to a close.
